Welcome to Abigail’s Trails, home of small-group guided walks with professional, qualified Mountain and Lowland Leaders who are Outdoor First Aid and Mental Health First Aid trained, and fully insured. Our walking group in Lancashire get to experience inspirational walks for connection, education and appreciation.
Based from our home in Rossendale, East Lancashire, we provide guided group walks, family walks, navigation training with a National Navigation Award Scheme provider, Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions, challenge hikes, and nature based activities for individuals, families, schools and corporate groups throughout the North West.
From our Snail Trails toddler group to our Grand Scale Trail mountain walks; whatever your age or ability, we have something for you!
Abi Thompson (Founder / Managing Director of Abigail’s Trails): I made Rossendale my home in August 2012 when I immediately fell in love with our beautiful valley. I spend most of my spare time walking or running on the moors with my family and our Springer spaniels, Ollie and Truffle.
I am a qualified Summer Mountain Leader, Lowland Leader, Accredited National Navigation Award Scheme Provider, Accredited Duke of Edinburgh Assessor and Outdoor First Aider.
I’ve enjoyed walking, running and playing in the great outdoors since my youth, when I spent many a weekend traipsing across Dartmoor to complete all 3 Ten Tors expeditions (35, 45 and 55 miles) and my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
My professional background as a Geography Teacher and ecologist has given me extensive knowledge of our natural surroundings; from woodland valleys to mountains and moorlands – from winter tree identification to understanding glacial landforms!
Clare Smith (Freelance Mountain Leader):
After more than 27 years teaching Geography, I followed my passion for the outdoors into a new chapter — sharing my love of nature and helping others to learn and grow beyond the classroom. Based in Anglesey / North Wales, I divide my time between teaching
Geography and delivering outdoor education on land and water, from guiding local walks to DofE expeditions.
I’m a qualified Mountain Leader, Paddlesports Instructor, and Outdoor First Aider, with a love for supporting people of all ages to develop confidence, teamwork, and resilience.
When I’m not teaching or leading groups, you’ll most likely find me in the hills — training for a triathlon / challenge, wild swimming, or exploring a new mountain / trail running route. I love the trails of Rivington and the West Pennine Moors (my old home turf) but am excited to expIore Eryri, Anglesey and the Llyn Peninsular. I enjoy both solo adventures and chatting as I walk and talk in equal measure.
Abigail’s Trails specialises in small group guided walks, led by experienced and knowledgeable leaders. These guided walks are designed to be friendly, relaxed and fun walking experiences for all abilities.
